Lore & Background

Niang's most memorable moments against Lyon came in the 2006–07 and 2007–08 seasons. On 31 January 2007, during the Coupe de France Round of 16, Lyon led 1–0 until the 88th minute. Then, with two minutes before injury time, Mickaël Pagis scored to equalize. Two minutes later, in the first minute of injury time, Mamadou Niang received an airborne pass and scored a header, giving Marseille a 2–1 win and qualification. Later that year, on 11 November 2007, Lyon took a 7th-minute lead through Juninho. Niang equalized from the penalty spot after 10 minutes, then scored again in the 43rd minute to give Marseille a 2–1 lead, which they held for a valuable victory at Gerland. On 6 April 2008, Niang scored twice (along with Djibril Cissé) as Marseille won 3–1, achieving their first league double over Lyon since the 1983–84 season.

In Their Own Story

The Stade Vélodrome was electric on 6 April 2008. Marseille, fighting for a Champions League spot, attacked from the start. Mamadou Niang scored twice before the half-hour mark, with Djibril Cissé also netting, putting Lyon on the back foot. Though an own goal gave Lyon a lifeline, Niang struck again early in the second half, bagging another goal to seal a 3–1 victory. This win gave Marseille their first league double over Lyon in over two decades.
